BTPS Approves 2023-2024 Annual Education Results Report and Audited Financial Statements
The Buffalo Trail Public Schools (BTPS) Board of Trustees has approved both the 2023-2024 Annual Education Results Report (AERR) and the Audited Financial Statements at their regular meeting on November 27, 2024.

The Annual Education Results Report highlights the division's progress, achievements, and focus areas in providing quality education for all students.
BTPS continues to focus on its mission of maximizing student learning in a safe and caring environment, supported by a highly effective team. This commitment aligns with the division’s vision of empowering students to become responsible, caring, and contributing global citizens with a lifelong passion for learning.
The report outlines three key priorities: Supporting Learning Success for All Students, Fostering Safe and Caring Learning Environments, and Building Strong Collaborations. These priorities guide BTPS’ efforts to provide high-quality education while ensuring all students feel supported and valued. Each priority includes specific outcomes, strategies, and measures to track progress and ensure continuous improvement.
Transparency and accountability remain central to BTPS’ approach. The BTPS Assurance Dashboard, available to all stakeholders, offers detailed performance data, historical trends, and insights for schools and key measures outlined in the AERR.
2023-2024 Audited Financial Statements
The audited financial statements provide a transparent overview of BTPS’ financial performance and aligns with Buffalo Trails’ commitment to fiscal responsibility and student-centred spending.
Financial Highlights
- Buffalo Trail Public Schools had an operating deficit for the 2023-2024 school year of $741,405. Overall, the positive financial results from the $2,239,337 planned drawdown on reserves was a reduction in spending to address needs in 2024-25.
- Many dollars not spent in 2023-24 have been budgeted for expenditure in 2024-25, with a projected budget deficit of $1.96 million most of which is school-based and instruction supports.
- To support our school facilities, for 2024-25 $425,000 in unspent dollars is planned to support Facilities Services due to a gap in available funding and the need to operate the number of school facilities throughout our school division.
- Based on the Alberta Government guidelines, in 2023-24 Buffalo Trail Public Schools would have been able to spend up to $2,376,783 on Central Services and Governance. For the 2023-24 year end, the actual amount spent was $2,150,073 or $264,235 below the guidelines. Unspent dollars were primarily used to support instruction and learning activities.
- Of the $59 million expensed in 2023-24, $40.9 million or 69% was spent on staffing with $29.4 million or 50% was toward teaching staff.
